Oh, I like it when you do that.
Question of the week:
What character quirks do you like?
There aren’t really specific quirks characters possess that I like.
What I do like, however, is when the character quirks make sense with that character. And yet, I also like when characters have one trait that is just very opposite of their overall personality. It gives the character depth and makes them endearing to read.
I don’t expect a bad ass character that collects knives to want flowers on her birthday, unless the character reveals that just once, she’d like to be surprised with a bouquet of roses. What? Our bad ass girl likes something as delicate as flowers? That’s cute…but we won’t tell her, because her knife collection is about as scary as her temper.
It’s especially enjoyable to me when a character has a quirk that makes for humorous scenes throughout the book. Like sarcasm and awkward conversations. Man I love when characters get snarky or are put in a position where no matter what they say it comes out awkwardly. Like a character with a potty mouth – that’s always fun to read.
Characters that have OCD tendencies, I relate to. When a character is nervous and resorts to nail biting/picking.
Flaws make fun traits too. A character that loves to paint — but is colorblind or has zero talent.
It’s weird. I can think of specific quirks I dislike and even hate (that comes next week), but I’m hard-pressed to think of any I truly love. In the end, it just depends on how well the character is written.
